Shock heating by FR I radio sources in galaxy clusters

چکیده
Feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGN) is frequently invoked to explain the cut-off of the galaxy luminosity function at the bright end and the absence of cooling flows in galaxy clusters. Meanwhile, there are recent observations of shock fronts around radioloud AGN. Using realistic 3D simulations of jets in a galaxy cluster, we address the question what fraction of the energy of active galactic nuclei is dissipated in shocks. We find that weak shocks that encompass the AGN have Mach numbers of 1.1-1.2 and dissipate at least 2% of the mechanical luminosity of the AGN. In a realistic cluster medium, even a continuous jet can lead to multiple shock structures, which may lead to an overestimate of the AGN duty cycles inferred from the spatial distribution of waves.

Jet/environment Interactions of Fr-i and Fr-ii Radio Galaxies
We present the results of new XMM observations of FR-I and FR-II radio galaxies that show the importance of jet/environment interactions for both radiosource structure and the properties of the surrounding gas. The FR-I observations reveal that the distribution of hot gas determines the radio-lobe morphology, and provide evidence that the subsonic expansion of the lobes heats the surrounding ga...

We correlate the positions of 13,240 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) with 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.3 from the maxBCG catalog with radio sources from the FIRST survey to study the sizes and distributions of radio AGN in galaxy clusters. We find that 19.7% of our BCGs are associated with FIRST sources, and this fraction depends on the stellar mass of the BCG, and to a lesser extent on the richness of the pa...
متن کاملHeating of the Hot Intergalactic Medium by Powerful Radio Galaxies and Associated High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission
There is increasing evidence that some heating mechanism in addition to gravitational shock heating has been important for the hot gas inside clusters and groups of galaxies, as indicated by their observed X-ray scaling properties. While supernovae are the most obvious candidate heating sources, a number of recent studies have suggested that they may be energetically insufficient. Here we consi...
متن کاملThe HST view of the FR I / FR II dichotomy ⋆
In order to explore how the FR I / FR II dichotomy is related to the nuclear properties of radio galaxies, we studied a complete sample of 26 nearby FR II radio galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and compared them with a sample of FR I previously analyzed. FR I nuclei lie in the radio-optical luminosity plane along a tight linear correlation, which argues for a common synchrotro...
متن کاملAn Alignment Effect in FR I Radio Galaxies : U - band Polarimetry of the Abell 2597 Cluster Central Galaxy Brian
We have obtained U-band polarimetry of the spatially extended, blue optical continuum associated with the FR I radio source PKS 2322−122. PKS 2322−122 is located in the Abell 2597 cluster central galaxy. We find a three sigma upper limit to the degree of polarization of the optical continuum of less than 6%. The accuracy of the measurement is limited primarily by our ability to measure the amou...
